Reality Day Brings Real-World Learning to Nearly 200 Students
On Wednesday March 25th, close to 200 students from 10 local rural schools including Nevada, Rich Hill, Sheldon, Miami, Bronaugh, Uniontown, Appleton City, Ballard and Montrose participated in Reality Day at Hume School. A huge thank you goes out to the incredible volunteers, employers and community partners who served as the “boots on the ground” for Reality Day. Their time, energy, and commitment made this impactful event possible.
Students rotated between stations and gained hands-on experience building real-world financial skills, exploring career pathways, and connecting with opportunities beyond high school. The event highlighted the power of collaboration, proving that community truly is strength.
The day featured a variety of engaging and educational activities, including an opening presentation by Josh Cook, owner of Josh's Vault and Lusso Porcelain. Next was an interactive “Pick-A-Panel” session led by industry professionals, and team-building experiences through Wildwood Outdoor Education Center. Students also participated in a budget simulation, an excavation demonstration, and a social media branding session. Additional highlights included a planetarium experience provided by Missouri S&T, a student panel sharing post–high school journeys, lunch from local food trucks, a student panel, three youth entrepreneur businesses and a BMX performance to close out the day. Students left with a free lunch, t-shirt, and many of them won prizes.
Reality Day was hosted at Hume R-8 Schools through a partnership between MU Extension in Bates County, rootEd Missouri, and the Missouri Scholarship & Loan Foundation, alongside numerous dedicated community partners. The event focused on equipping students with essential financial literacy skills while helping them explore postsecondary and career options.
Community partners who participated include: Peerless Products, Inc.; MoDOT Southwest; Walnut Creek Agri Service LLC; Bates County Memorial Hospital; Bates County Sheriff’s Office; Dirks Heavy Contractors; West Central Missouri Community Action Agency; Thomas Industrial Coatings; 9F Manufacturing; Crowder Community College; Ellett Memorial Hospital; Josh’s Vault; Joshua Rushing, Clinch Realty; Mystical Misfits; Midwestern Ox Productions; State Technical College of Missouri; Pittsburg State University; Missouri Department of Higher Education & Workforce Development; Fort Scott Community College; Lusso Porcelain & Design; Murphy Family Ventures; Washington University; and Deems Automotive.
Thank you again to everyone who showed up, gave back, and helped make Reality Day a success.
